Had some real fun with the Panasonic GH2 and the excellent Panasonic 20/1.7 today – unfortunately only for 5 minutes or so, since a friend of mine handed it to me. It feels great in your hand, the EVF is quite good, even if I’m no EVF-fan. It’s quick, AF is awesome, noise seems quite well controlled for a micro 4/3 camera (at least at ISO 400). I hope to get a chance to use it more extensively after Christmas. Here are four shots to give you an impression. All from RAW, processed in Lightroom 3 (click to enlarge).

Another year goes by. There was hardly a day, when I didn’t take at least one picture. Looking through all the images I realise, it’s been quite a European year. Didn’t cross an ocean in the last 365 days physically and didn’t miss it.
Looking through the images I also realise, how many cameras I’ve been using this year. Some were cool (actually most of them were), some I couldn’t really relate to or get warm with and with some I fell in love as far as love for cameras can go.

I haven’t been writing a lot recently as you know. The reason is, after all that testing and reviewing I needed to take care of my photography instead of cameras and lenses. I found myself doing test-images and forgetting about the primary goal of this blog: the everyday, reallife-use of photographic equipment. I’ve been actually testing quite a few cameras and lenses in the meantime, but with an emphasis rather on their fun-factor than on their high ISO-performance or technical image quality. I’ll give you my impressions of such things as the Canon EOS 60D or the Sony SLT A55 in the next days.

I’ve always been impressed by the great performance of the Micro Four Thirds cameras. When I first used a Leica Summilux-M 35/1.4 Asph. with an Olympus E-P1 I was stunned, how sharp and brilliant the pictures were.

In a couple of days I’d like to show you, what the Leica Elmarit-M 24/2.8 Asph. can do on the E-P1.

A couple of days ago I had the chance to use the least expensive Leica 35mm lens, the Leica Summarit 35/2.5 on the Panasonic GF1.
I’d like to provide you with just a couple of images I got out of this very nice combination. Most people are put off by the very high price of Leica lenses. Yes, they are expensive but you also get a good resale value.
I personally can’t imagine buying a new Leica lens. Neither my bank account, nor my credit card nor my wife would allow it. And in most cases you’re better off to buy a used one anyway. But if you’re looking for a relatively affordable new Leica 35mm-lens, this may be the way to go.

The Summarit 35 is sharp, provides a nice bokeh and before all is really small and a nice companion for a micro 4/3 camera. I have yet to do some testing of how it behaves on APS-C sensor Smaccs (Small competent cameras) like the Sony Nex. In a view days I should have some results.

Since so many visitors come from countries, where German is hardly on the fringes, I decided to give you guys an english version of some of my blog entries. Let me apologise for my English first – I know there will be a lot of mistakes, since it’s not my motherlanguage, but I figured, it might be better than those often funny google translations.

I’d like to start with this real world comparison of these three small competent cameras: The brand new Sony Nex-3, the Olympus E-PL1 and the Leica X1.

Why are they milestones among cameras? Because they are reasonably compact and still have a large Sensor in them, that promises image quality similar to DSLRs.
The choice between those Smaccs gets larger and larger. Photokina is coming in September and a lot of rumors tell us, there might be new models being introduced in the upcoming months.

I wanted to know, which one of the small competent cameras – let’s call them Smaccs from now on – suits my needs and my likings the best? I wanted to do a comparison in a real world setting and not in a Lab. I appreciate technical reviews but figured that only the realworld reviews available on the net from great guys like Steve Huff and others eventually influence my choice making process.
So this comparison isn’t meant to deliver scientific charts, but everyday experience to give you a feeling for the cameras. Technical data on paper and using these cameras are totally different stories.

The contestants

I made a choice of three different brands and three different concepts:

• The new Sony Nex-3 with the 18-55/3.5-5.6 OSS kit lens
• The Olympus E-PL1, which has been on the market for a couple of months and prooved to be a great camera.

Eigentlich wollte ich ja eine Leica X1 und sonst nix auf meinen Familienurlaub in Kroatien mitnehmen. Aber ich kann sie mir im Moment (noch) nicht leisten. Deshalb nutzte ich die ruhigen Tage dazu, die D700 und die Olympus E-PL1 eines Freundes sowie meine Nex-3 mitzunehmen. Ich wollte mal sehen, wie’s mir mit den verschiedenen Formaten geht und ob die Bildqualität einer D700 ihr Last auf meinen Schultern wettmachen kann. Und ich wollte mit der Nex einige Zeit mehr verbringen, als bei meinem kürzlichen Test gegen E-PL1 und X1, für den ich bloß ein Wochenende Zeit hatte.

Ein sehr unfairer Vergleich in der österreichischen Mittagshitze:

Die arme Sony Nex-3 muss sich mit ihrem 18-55/3.5-5.6 Setobjektiv mit der Olympus E-PL1 mit dem fantastischen Panasonic 20/1.7 und mit der Nikon D700 mit dem ebenso fantastischen AF-S 24-70/2.8 messen. Hinzu kommt, dass Lightroom noch immer keine RAWs der Nex verarbeitet, womit sie hier nur JPG- gegen RAW-Qualität der anderen bieten kann.
Nachdem ich aber morgen auf eine 1-wöchige Reise gehe, wollte ich wissen, ob ich die große, schwere Nikon mitnehmen soll oder mich getrost auf die beiden Mirrorless-Kameras beschränken kann. Sicherheitshalber kommt die Nikon mal mit, man weiß ja nie…

Blende-Belichtungszeit-Kombi habe ich annähernd entsprechend der Sensorgröße gewählt, womit sich eine ähnliche Schärfentiefe ergeben sollte. Aber hier geht’s vor allem nur um Detailauflösung.

Ich mag Lightroom für die RAW-Verarbeitung wirklich sehr. Aber es würde nur halb soviel Spaß machen, hätte ich nicht für meine Kameras sogenannte Presets, oder zu deutsch Vorgaben vorbereitet, mit denen ich eine ganze Reihe an Bildeinstellung auf Knopfdruck machen kann. Und weil wir alle eine große Community sind, möchte ich euch heute meine persönlichen Lightroom 3 Presets für die Sony Nex-3/5 (einstweilen nur für JPGs, da LR die RAW-Daten noch nicht unterstützt), für die Leica X1 und für die Olympus E-PL1, E-P1 und E-P2 zur verfügung stellen.

Sie sind da: Kleine, mehr oder weniger kompakte Digitalkameras, die Bilder liefern sollen, wie man sie bis jetzt nur aus digitalen Spiegelreflexkameras (DSLRs) kannte.

Die Auswahl unter diesen Kameras wird laufend größer. Aber welche ist – zumindest im Moment – die richtige? Ich wollte es für mich wissen. Wenn ich dir damit bei deiner Auswahl weiterhelfe, freu’ ich mich natürlich riesig.

Ich war gespannt und wollte mal einiger dieser Kameras in einem Alltagstest miteinander vergleichen. Und hier sind meine Ergebnisse. Da möchte ich gleich mal vorwegschicken, dass es im Internet eine ganze Reihe an technischen / wissenschaftlichen Tests gibt, die ich auch immer wieder lese. Endgültig entscheiden kann ich mich aber erst für eine Kamera, wenn ich sie mal in der Hand gehalten und mit ihr ein paar Testfotos gemacht habe. Dieser Vergleichstest hat also nichts mit Messdaten oder Ergebnischarts zu tun, sondern soll ein Gefühl für die Kameras, ihre Vor- und Nachteile und ihre “Usability” bieten.

Die Test-Kandidaten

Für meinen Test habe ich mir drei Kameras ausgesucht:

• Die brandneue Sony Nex-3 mit 18-55/3.5-5.6 Objektiv
• Die bereits einige Monate junge Olympus E-PL1, die bei Testern für ihre Bildqualität sehr beliebt ist.
